Joint submission with SINEAD DELANEY for the ArtScape Design Competition @ Ards Forest Park, Donegal
‘An Cruach Rua’ (The Red Stack) is a simple timber structure that looks out across the waters of Clonmass Bay. A shelter that stands apart from the natural protection of the woodlands, it stands on the fringe of the parklands. The ‘Cruach’ requires minimal assembly and has unadorned detailing. Economical and intuitive in its installation, the layering of this light and unobtrusive stud system ensures a negligible impact on its physical site while providing a visually intricate spectacle for users of the parkland.
Inspired by contemporary work such as Meitheal-ethic by the Wood Collective, the design of An Cruach Rua is one that celebrates the magic and possibility of building with timber. The interplay of light in the Ards Forest was a quality that we desired to capture in this design. The late evening colours of purples and reds across the parklands brought to mind many Irish iconic works that celebrate the colour red. An emotionally intense colour, red’s high visibility and strong energy were the core reasons we chose to apply this colour to the façade of the proposed shelter.
